Built of brick, white marble, and limestone, Philadelphia City Hall is the world’s largest free standing masonry building. Designated in 1976 as a National Historic Landmark, Philadelphia City Hall is also the largest municipal building in the United States with over 14 acres of floor space. The building was constructed from 1871 to 1901, and is situated on land donated by William Penn, the founder of the province of Pennsylvania in 1681. The building statues showcase over 250 sculptures; artists, educators, and engineers who embodied American ideas and contributed to the country’s genius.
Today, the historic building houses 3 branches of the city’s government. The city’s Executive Branch (the Mayor’s Office), its Legislative Branch (the Philadelphia City Council), and a substantial portion of the Judicial Branch. The building is also home to the city’s observation deck located 50 feet above street level. With all the daily functions and tourist attractions in and around this building, the outdated backup generator for emergency critical functions was in need of being replaced. The Philadelphia Municipal Government looked to Blue Star Power Systems, Inc. to provide a solution.
Model VD600-01 rated 600 kWe was selected for this application. The unit is powered by a Volvo Penta TWD1644GE diesel engine which drives a HCI534E Alternator. The unit is housed in a Level 2 enclosure with sound attenuated foam and mounted on top of a 660-gallon 24-hour sub-base fuel tank. The unit is controlled by a Blue Star Power Systems, Inc. DSE7310 digital control panel.
Blue Star Power Systems, Inc., a power generation systems integration specialist, manufactures complete diesel and gaseous generator sets ranging from 20 to 2000 kWe. Serving all agriculture and industrial sectors, our products are sold through a network of distributors strategically located in the U.S. and Canadian markets.
